The first couple days of school are now behind us, and we hope that if you or your child were feeling any initial nervousness due to the unknown that can come with the start of the school year, that it has now started to shift to a sense of understanding of what the year will be like and some more comfort for all.
It was an absolute pleasure to see the excitement of students upon their return, and we look forward to many more joys and learning experiences throughout this year’s educational journey. Ms. Ly and I were able to connect with all classrooms throughout the first two days as students began to settle into their new classrooms.
Below, you will find a few pieces of information which will continue to support the student experience at Marion Carson School.
*A reminder that there is no school on Monday, September 2, 2024 due to the Labour Day long weekend. School resumes on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
- Start of Year Forms: next week your will receive a very important message about completing various forms such as our demographic forms, student health plans, and more. Please complete these as soon as they are received so that we have the most up to date information for your child in case of emergency.
- Communication: This year, we are using a digital approach of communication, through Google Classroom and School Messenger. Some grades will continue to have a back and forth communication folder for any paper messaging or family notes. This process will be communicated by your classroom teacher. Please be sure to sign-in to your classroom teacher’s Google classroom once the link has been shared with you. This will give you weekly learning updates, upcoming classroom and whole school events, and provide resources to support your child’s learning. Also, please be sure to sign-up for School Messenger messages. Please be sure to check the box during School Messenger sign-up to accept “commercial messages”, so that you will receive all messages. If you do not, you will not be included in messaging that contains information related to money (e.g. field trip notices) from both the classroom and the school administration and may miss out on important dates and information.
- Marion Carson Instructional Calendar 2024-2025: This calendar shares instructional and non-instructional dates for the school year and is a great flat sheet to be posted in a prominent location in your home. Marion Carson Instructional Calendar 2024-2025
- Marion Carson Digital Family Handbook 2024-25: The Marion Carson Digital Family Handbook is found below. Please read through the handbook with your child(ren) for important school information related to school process, procedures, and expectations. We ask that all parents and children sign the final commitment page and return it to their teacher (either digitally or as a paper copy) prior to the School Conference on September 26/27. - Meeting Spot / Pick-Up: As we are a school with two main entry/exit points for students and families there can be a lot of congestion at our doors at the start and end of the days. The following information will support a smooth, safe and welcoming transition in and out of school each day.
- Start of Day: we ask that families utilize the 5-minutes soft entry time from 9:00am – 9:05am to make their way into the building calmly and safely as they arrive. Students will begin this entry plan starting on Tuesday, September 3 upon return to school. Teachers have spoken to students about this entry plan in additional to whole-school announcements. Please also speak to your child about entering the building upon arrival during these times. Students should not stop and play outdoors, and should enter the building calmly in an orderly manner upon arrival to ensure that they are ready for teacher instruction to begin promptly at 9:05am. If students arrive after 9:05am, they should come to the main west doors, and ring the doorbell to receive a welcome slip from the office.
- End of day: We ask that families, especially with students in grade 2 and up choose a meeting spot away from the doors where it will become routine to pick up and meet with your child (e.g. a spot on the field or by a certain location on the courtyard away from the doors). *Reminder that parents must be at school to pick-up their children upon dismissal and children should not be left alone. We do not have after school supervision aside from busing; therefore we remind parents that Monday to Thursday we end at 3:40pm, and Fridays at 1:15pm. Please plan on being at the school 5 minutes early at a minimum to meet your child. Please call the school should you have an emergency where you will be a few minutes late and we will have the students on these odd occasions wait at the office. Please speak to your children about knowing that if you are not outside to pick them up that they should come to the front west doors and ring the doorbell to be let back into the school, where we will contact their family on their behalf (we have also had this conversation with students).
Throughout the year, I will be sending messages most often arriving on a Friday which will include important information such as upcoming events, initiatives, school council meeting dates, and more. Thank you for taking the time to read these messages and the teacher’s messages so that all students can have a most successful school year filled with a sense of belonging, care and growth and so that you can be the most up to date on school activities and upcoming events. Should you have any questions, please be sure to review our school website or contact your school teacher for classroom matters. For administrative supports, please call the school office at 403 777-6050 or email MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca.
