Winter Festival – December 16 - 20, 2024

This year we have made the decision not to have a Winter Concert, but instead have a weeklong holiday season celebration with various community building activities connected to student learning and that support creating a welcome, safe and caring environment for all. This week also includes various initiatives that focus on students and staff leading activities that promote the spirit of giving, both to each other within the Marion Carson School community and to the citizens of Calgary as a whole. Listed below are the upcoming school-wide activities during the Winter Festival Week of December 16 to 20, 2024. Please mark your calendars and join in on the fun!


Monday Dec. 16, 2024

-        Spirit Day Theme: Winter Holiday Colours

-        Whole-School Activity: Whole School Door Decorating contest

-        Week of Giving Donation Theme:


Tuesday, December 17, 2024

-        Spirit Day Theme: Marion Carson Apparel

  • Wear Marion Carson Apparel / blue, gold or yellow clothing

-        Whole-School Activity:

Caroling

  • Organized by Grade K, 2, 4, and 6
  • 9:30am – 10:00am
  • Parents are welcome to join


Bookmark Creation / Trade:

  • Students will create bookmarks in their class focussing on kind messaging and then give them to a student from another class later in the week.

Wednesday, December 18, 2024

-        Spirit Day Theme: Holiday Theme Decoration Day

  • Wear your holidays hats, dress up like a snowflake, ornament, or in whichever way you enjoy and celebrate the holidays

-        Whole-School Activity: Caroling

  • Organized by Grade 1, 3, and 5
  • 10:15am – 10:45am
  • Parents are welcome to join

-        Week of Giving Donation Theme:


Thursday, December 19, 2024

-        Spirit Day Theme: Pyjama Day

  • Come to school cozy in your nice and warm pyjamas, slippers and more (ff coming with a stuffed animal, please be sure it is labelled)

-        Whole-School Activity: Community Winter Walk to Bowmont Park:

  • This event will focus on the changing of the seasons and an exploration of the sights and sounds of the community of Varsity and city of Calgary
  • Parents are welcome to join.
  • Schedule:
  • 9:15am – 10:15am: Grade K-2
  • 10:25am – 11:25am: Grade 3 and 4
  • 1:15pm – 2:15pm: Grade 5 and 6


-        Week of Giving Donation Theme:

  • Last day for donations to Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), Calgary Food Bank, and Toy Mountain

-        School Council/Parent Association - Movie night

  • Come with your family to enjoy a movie at the school on the big screen (doors open at 5:30pm, movie starts at 6pm)
  • Wear your pyjamas
  • Last call for any final donations for the week of giving (donations will be collected in the main hallway near the office)


Friday, December 20, 2024

-        Spirit Day Theme: Ugly Sweater Day

  • Wear some “ugly” holiday sweaters or shirts (some would say ugly, others would say wonderful)

-        Whole-School Activity: Winter Sports Day

  • Outdoor Winter Sports Stations (please dress for the weather and for outdoor play)
  • Indoor Winter Crafts
  • Treat provided by School Council (Warm Apple Cider and a Candy Cane) *If you would not like your child to have either of these provided treats, please email your child’ teacher
  • Bookmark exchange: Classes will give their created bookmarks to their connected class.

-        Week of Giving Donation Theme:

  • Accepting Accessible Creative Playground Cash Donations
  • School Council is fundraising to build an accessible creative playground for everyone to enjoy. Please consider making a cash donation

-        School Council/Parent Association – Informal sledding community gathering

  • Sledding at Varsity Ravine Park off 53rd street NW.
  • Come with your family, bring your sleds, a thermos with a hot beverage for your family to share and slide down the hills with your friends from school.
  • Helmets are recommended. 
  • Come anytime after school’s early dismissal and stay as long as your heart’s content. This is an informal event, so please ensure students remain with their supervising adult at all times (please do not drop off children on their own)

  • Doors open at 5:30pm, with the movie starting at 6pm.
  • Cash concession available.
  • Get your tickets ahead of time here: Movie Night!
  • Don’t forget to bring to bring your gifts to be wrapped

Just email mcschoolcouncil@gmail.com and let us know what you would like to order, and we will let you know if it is in stock. Payment can be made by e-transfer and we will deliver the items to your student's classroom!

Donations Wanted for Playground Fundraiser Silent Auction

Auction items needed by January 25th, 2025. We need donations of gift cards, baskets, tickets, and new items to be auctioned off in February! Email everykidcanplayMC@gmail.com or mcschoolcouncil@gmail.com to arrange donations!
