Hello / Nǐ hǎo Marion Carson School Families,

In this message…

-          Safety Over Convenience

-          Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences

-          Time Capsule Revealed

-          Evacuation and Lockdown Drills

-          SoundKreations Dance Residency

-          Field Trip and In-Class Fees

We look forward to seeing everyone at conferences tonight and tomorrow. A friendly reminder to follow all rules of the road when dropping off or picking up your children. When the weather was warmer, we noticed families doing a great job of using our crosswalks or dropping off children within the Hug and Go section. Parents were commenting on how well the Hug and Go was working this year compared to the congestion of years past. With the fresh snow and colder weather, we have noticed an increase in traffic along Varsity Drive and some families are beginning to jaywalk, drop their children off in the middle of the road, do U-turns in the school zone, or stay parked in the Hug and Go.

Please continue to ensure a safe commute to and from school for all families by choosing safety over convenience even with the colder weather by using designated parking/drop off locations, crossing at crosswalks only, and moving your car from the Hug and Go once your child has exited the vehicle so that other families can quickly drop off their children. We appreciate your support in helping keep our families safe.

Some items of note…

1.    Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences

Reminder that this evening and tomorrow morning are our parent-student-teacher conferences. We look forward to seeing all families at this school event. Due to school conferences, there is no school on Friday, November 28, 2025. Please be sure to visit the following while you are in the building for conferences:

o   Book Fair (in Learning Commons)

o   Music and PEW (Thursday from 5-7pm , Friday from 10am-12pm)

o   Lost & Found Tables (Main Hallway by the Office)

o   Need a Backpack, Take a Backpack Table (by the front West doors)

2.    Time Capsule Revealed

We have been working with the CBE grounds team to dig up the time capsule that was created back in the year 2000 by students and staff of Marion Carson School. Today, we had a surprise online assembly as a whole school where we revealed the process of digging it up and some of its contents.

The items will be on display starting next week in the learning commons for classrooms and guests to visit and explore. We are very thankful to the people who created this capsule for our enjoyment and learning. We invite families when in the building to have a look. Please ensure that you leave items in their place so that they can be enjoyed by all.

Click here to see a PowerPoint PDF that shares the process and gives an overview of some of the items discovered.

3.    Evacuation and Lockdown Drills

Each year, we work with students to practice what to do in case of an emergency through evacuation drills (fire drills) and lockdown practices. Students have had discussions in class about the process of these drills since the start of the school year. Yesterday, we had an unexpected evacuation drill, and today we had a scheduled lockdown practice. Students and staff were amazing in how they calmy and efficiently followed procedure in both types of scenarios.

We kindly ask that you please speak to your children about these types of practices (evacuation and lockdowns), and about the importance of keeping clear of the evacuation pull stations unless there is an emergency.

4.    SoundKreations Dance Residency – Student Performance

The SoundKreations Dance Residency begins next week and will follow the theme of “We Connect” through the hip hop rhythms of winter songs. Parents are invited to come and watch the students’ culminating dance performance on Friday, December 12, 2025. Seating will be limited; therefore, we ask families who attend to be prepared to stand for the performance (30-45 minutes).

Performance #1:

-          Starts at 10am

-          Grade 1, 2, 5, and 6 students

Performance #2:

-          Starts at 12pm

-          MB Tu/Th Kindergarten, Grade 3 and 4 students

5.    Field Trip and In-Class Fees

For school fees, did you know there are two types of field trip and in-class event fees, non-refundable and refundable?

Non-refundable Fee:

A non-refundable fee is when the school prepays for all students to attend. If the school needs to prepay for all students to participate, then the fee is not removed if a student is absent. All transportation fees are non-refundable.

Refundable Fee:

If the school pays the fee after the event, and is charged for only the students who attend, then the school will remove the fee for students who missed the event.
