Hello / Nǐ hǎo Marion Carson School Families,
In this message…
- Labour Action
- School Council and Parent Association
Thank you to all families for their messages of support and acts of kindness over the past week. We had a wonderful week of learning and connection. Yesterday and today, students were given an opportunity to take home a book should they choose from the remaining pile of books from the used book fundraiser. Many students picked out some great pieces of literature for their home library collection. We hope this can bring some joy to your household, through literacy. We also had student leadership tally up the donations from our Toonies for Terry Campaign. Cash donations totaled $623.75, and online donations totaled $550. In total we raised $1173.75! Way to go Marion Carson School families.
Some items of note…
1. Labour Action
CBE sent a message to all families on Wednesday regarding ATA labour action. This message can be found on the CBE’s labour action page and is pasted below for your convenience. Please be sure to keep up to date on CBE’s messaging around labour action through this webpage.
Some key pieces of note from the CBE and the school…
- At this time, the CBE is preparing for an Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike beginning on Monday, Oct. 6.
- All classes will be cancelled. Do not send your child to school.
- Transportation will be cancelled. Do not leave your child at a bus stop.
- All school athletics, trips and extracurricular activities will be suspended or cancelled.
- Access to Google classroom will remain open and available for students and families to use the resources embedded. Please note that teachers will not have access to these platforms, therefore they will not be monitored.
- Mathletics and Reading Eggs home learning programs are also expected to remain active for family use, using the student’s login information provided earlier in the year by the teacher (as a school, we encourage families to continue using these tools)
- The Alberta government has made financial and learning resources available to families:
o To access funds, eligible parents must create an account online. Registration and verification can be completed online.
o Families can also access a learning resources toolkit on the government’s website.
2. A Message from School Council / Parent Association
Please read the following messages carefully as we won't be able to communicate during any labour disruption except on our social media pages.
With the labour disruption coming up, this affects our fundraising efforts for October, and longer depending on how long it lasts. We will only be running the following while school is not in session:
Pure Casino Fundraiser October 26 & 27 is Still Running!
Please take a look at the signup and see if you, your family or friends can take a shift. This fundraiser is our main source of income for the next 2 years, and if we do not have sufficient volunteers, the casino will cancel the event. This would mean that the MCPA cannot pay for the items in our budget (Mathletics, NEW playground, field trip bussing, Trickster Theatre residency, teacher's needs, staff appreciation days, and learning tools for the whole school). We currently need 30 more volunteers! No experience and no volunteer police clearance needed. Sign-up to volunteer using this link: Marion Carson Parent Association: Pure Casino Fundraiser Oct 26-27
Davison Apple Order Pickup Alert – October 21, 2025
We're handing out apple boxes purchased from the fundraiser in the school parking lot on October 21 from 3:30–6:00 PM rain or shine, school or no school!
Important: All orders must be picked up that day as we don’t have access to the school for overnight storage. Spread the word and set a reminder! We still need volunteers to assist with apple pickup between 4:45 and 6pm on Tuesday, Oct 21st. Sign up here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/apple-volunteers-sign-up
The winner of the competition for most apple sales is Ms. Baldwin's class! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser! Class prize to be announced in the future.
Nature Play Fundraiser
Nature Play, an outdoor play program for kids of all ages, is hosting a special, limited time fundraiser just for Marion Carson Families! Until October 15, Nature Play will give 100% of the fees to support the Parent Council's work, up to $1000 total. Additional registrations can be processed until Oct 31 with 20% of the fees going to the school. Please check out Nature Play’s website at www.natureplaykids.ca, and if you would like to sign your child up, email Devon directly at devonkarchut@natureplaykids.ca
