Wellness Watch with Ms. Collins
Our Physical Education and Wellness (PEW) curriculum is relatively new. CBE’s PEW curriculum is aimed at helping students make smart choices for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. My Wellness Watch column is crafted to inform and help parents understand the focus on Wellness within our new PEW objectives speaking directly to what is occurring in class.
For February, our students will be working on friendship skills. Friendship skills include sharing, turn-taking, cooperating, listening to others, managing disagreements and seeing others’ points of view. Friendship skills help increase one’s sense of belonging and purpose, and at Marion Carson - We All Belong.
The assessment of students’ friendship skills is connected to the following I CAN statement:
- Kindergarten: I CAN begin to understand what makes a healthy friendship
- Grade 1: I CAN practice words and actions that support healthy friendships
- Grade 2: I CAN reflect on how personal relationships are maintained or strengthened
- Grade 3: I CAN resolve conflict by sharing the responsibility in coming to fair solutions to problems with my friends
- Grade 4: I CAN use my actions to show that I understand we all have the right to live in healthy, safe, and bully-free environments
- Grade 5: I CAN understand that differing perspectives are possible within healthy friendships and show effective listening and communication skills
- Grade 6: I CAN understand that healthy friendships require consideration for different opinions, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and needs
I hope this Wellness Watch column serves as a starting point to understanding our new PEW curriculum. Thank you in advance for engaging with your child(ren) to continue to support these skills from home. Please visit our PEW Google Classroom for more details about weekly learning. ~Ms. Amanda Collins and Ms. Track
The Music Experience at Marion Carson School
The music experience at Marion Carson School is led by the Alberta Education curriculum which focusses on providing opportunities for students to connect to the world around them through creating, presenting, appreciating, and responding to music. As students become aware of the expressive elements of music, they develop insight into human experience. Foundational knowledge and understanding of the elements of music supports students in developing music literacy and skills through active musical engagement in the areas of singing, playing, listening, moving, reading, and writing. This knowledge serves as the foundation from which students can further develop an understanding of and appreciation for the beauty of music within historical, cultural, and contemporary contexts. Through creative processes, students learn that individual and collaborative music making fosters the expression of ideas, feelings, and experiences.
In February at Marion Carson School, all classes in Music have begun a focus on reinforcing known rhythms previously practiced. As students build their ability to perform rhythms with accuracy, appropriate new grade level rhythms will also be introduced to challenge students as we continue throughout the year.
Along with rhythm practice, grade 2 students have also been identifying and discovering the rise and fall of melodies while Grade 3 and 4 students have begun to explore different ways to set-up barred instruments for their Orff learning.
Students in grades 5 and 6 have been working intensively on rhythms, while at the same time working on staff and clef learning to prepare for their separate upcoming recorder experience. ~Ms. Seto
