Learning Commons at the CBE

Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.

School Literary Materials Selection

Related to Ministerial Order (#034/2025), Standards for the Selection, Availability, and Access of School Library Materials, CBE has published an administrative regulation AR3051: School Literary Materials Selection. Families and community members can request a review or reconsideration of a literary resource in a school's learning commons by completing the School Library Materials Reconsideration Challenge Request through their local school.

CBE also has an eLibrary online tool available to families, students and staff, which is an online catalogue for all CBE school libraries with detailed information on books, DVD’s and other resources that are available to borrow.

Additionally, parents and legal guardians are welcome to review classroom library collections by contacting your child's school.

About Our Learning Commons

  • The Learning Commons is a multi use area with up to 3 or 4 classes in it at a time. Respect for the materials and space, and other students/staff working is very important.
  • Students are allowed to take out 2 books at any one time. Each class has a regularly scheduled time for book exchange. This time is flexible should the teacher need to reschedule as he/she sees fit.
  • Should a student finish with a book and need a new book, they are able to come to the Learning Commons during school hours with permission from their teacher to sign out a new book.
  • Students are asked to return overdue books (2 week loan period) prior to signing out new books. Should the book be lost or damaged (water damage from backpacks is number one thing), they are asked to pay for the book.

The Library Learning Commons is an integral part of the school’s instructional program. This space is used for students learning while within the building and as a book exchange. Students are allowed to borrow books for a loan period of one week. Students may return books and select new ones within the one-week period. If books are lost or damaged we will request payment to help cover the cost of replacing the item.
