Welcome back to school as we kick off a with a cold start to 2024. Students had a great first week back, and have many great things to look forward to throughout January and beyond.

January 15, 2024: Non-Instructional Day (No School for Students)

 

Lunar New Year Whole School Residency with Quest Theatre

We are very excited to share that from January 22, 2024 to February 2 2024 we will be having our Whole School Lunar New Year Multi-Cultural Residency and Celebration. It will be split up into two separate residences (Group 1 during the first week from January 22-26, and Group 2 during the second week from January 29 – February 2. Each week’s participating classes will celebrate their learning with a 4pm performance on the Friday at the end of their residency week in the Marion Carson School gymnasium.

 

The purpose of the residency it to bring our school community together to celebrate multi-culturalism and belonging at Marion Carson School, with a focus on celebrating the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dragon. We are thankful for the Parent Association who has provided $5500 to reduce the residency cost, and Quest Theatre who has found an external sponsor to provide an additional $5000. This has reduced the parent cost to $10/student. Please visit your MyCBE account to pay this reduced fee which has now been added to your account.

 

Week 1 Group - January 22 to 26, 2024 with final performance on January 26, at 4pm)

Doors will open at 3:20pm. Students should arrive no later than 3:40pm

 

Please plan on being in attendance on your respective evening to support your classroom. Similar to our Winter celebration, we expect a full building on this evening, therefore to ensure that we’re not overcrowded, stay within our building capacity limits, and ensure that all families are provided an opportunity to attend the event, we ask that families limit their attendance to a maximum of two parents/guardians per family and their sibling(s).

West Entry Doors will be opened 40 minutes before each 4pm performance. If waiting outside, please line up down the sidewalk towards Varsity Drive. Please ensure that if you are driving to this event, you park in designated parking spaces, and avoid the staff parking lot or impacting any of our surrounding community homes. 

 

2024-25 School Year Registration Opens Monday, January 15, 2024

Our open house for potential new families interested in attending Marion Carson School for the 2024-2025 school year in either the Mandarin Bilingual Program or Community English Program was yesterday January 11, 2024. Please spread the word about the great things happening at Marion Carson School and invite any interested families looking for more information to visit our school website here for more details and to review the uploaded shared yesterday.

Families with younger siblings interested in attending Marion Carson for the first-time next school year should be aware that registration opens this Monday January 15, 2024 and is completed fully online through SchoolEngage on your MyCBE account.

-        If registering for the Community English Program, registration opens January 15, 2024 and continues through until next year.

-        If registering for the Chinese Mandarin Bilingual Program we have a lottery process. The lottery process was established to ensure fair and equitable access to school programs with a student population that is either at capacity or over capacity. For the 2024-25 school year, registrations submitted between January 15, 2024 and prior to the lottery deadline of 12 PM (noon) on Feb. 13, 2024, will be included in the lottery draws. If you have family, friends, or a current student’s sibling interested in attending the Mandarin Bilingual program, please ensure that they are registered in the lottery. *Please note that current students who attend Marion Carson School and live in our catchment do not need to re-register each year as they’re automatically rolled over into their next year’s grade.

 

Report Card Update

K-6 teachers will report progress to parents/legal guardians via January and June report cards. The January report cards go live for viewing on January 30 through your MyCBE account. New this year for Kindergarten students is that the January online report cards will identify progress in English Language Arts and Literature, Chinese Language Arts, and Math. Grade 1-6 students will continue to have report card progress reports on all subject areas this January. In June, progress in all discipline areas for all K-6 students will be communicated to parents/legal guardians via the online report card.  

 

Adolescent Brain Development | Family & Caregiver Well-Being Session

As part of a continued effort to support the well-being of students, CBE is committed to sharing valuable information about child and youth well-being with families and caregivers. This is the second (of five) sessions available for families and caregivers, this time focusing on 'brain development in adolescence'. It will be held online on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 6:30pm - 8pm.

A Message from School Council / Parent Association

Please join us at our next School Council meeting on January 17, 2024 in person in the Library Learning Commons. At this meeting, Council will be discussing the bylaws to support our school in qualifying for our next Casino Fundraiser (the biggest fundraiser for our school). Council needs at least 25 people present to pass the bylaw updates and hopes for your support through your presence. Please click here for the upcoming agenda and bylaws for consideration.
