Remembrance Day
The Grade 5 student are hosting our school's Remembrance Day Assembly on November 8. The ceremony begins at 10:45 am and concludes at 11:15 am. Please speak to your child(ren) to support an understanding that it a solemn assembly, where we pay our respect to those who fought for our freedom. If any students are members of Scouts, Girl Guides, Cadets, or other similar uniformed or affiliated groups, they are encouraged to dress in uniform should they wish.
We would like to invite parents of performing students from Grade 5 classes as well as parents of children in uniform to attend if able. Please note that due to fire safety code we have to limit our parent viewing to the first 150 parents. Doors will open at 10:40am. If waiting outside, we ask that you please line up along the Main West Door sidewalk leading out towards Varsity Drive.
Please note, that students will be given a poppy (sticker or pin) on November 8. Should you wish to donate to the Poppy Fund, student leaders will be circulating the school on Wednesday, November 8th collecting donations from students.
Veteran’s Food Bank
The Grade 5 team is excited to announce the Veteran's Association Food drive running from November 6 to 8, 2023. We are asking parents, guardians and students to participate by donating items such as non-perishables, self-care products, toiletries, culinary implements, pet food, and even gift cards! Donations brought to school can placed in the donation bins located by the main entrance.
Staffing Update:
It is the time of year where we often make staffing adjustments for the year. The adjustments occur mainly based off of student enrolment at Marion Carson School at the end of September, as compared to our staffing based off of last Spring’s projections. Sometimes enrolment goes up, and sometimes it goes down due to various factors. This year, our whole school enrolment went up 16 students, supporting some increases in staffing. This has allowed us to pursue the following staffing changes, based on student and school needs to directly and most effectively support all students in the school.
- Increasing a current School Assistant’s weekly hours by 5 more hours per week.
- Adding another 15 hour/week School Assistant to our school staffing model.
- Adding an additional Lunchroom Supervisor.
- Increasing our Behaviour Support Worker’s weekly hours by 5 more hours per week.
- Adding weekly time to 1 of our Kindergarten teachers, making both Community English programs teacher at half time (full time with their respective classrooms.
- Adding a half time Resource Teacher to support student learning in Math, Literacy, Well-being, and Inclusive Learning
Winter Outdoor Clothing donations
Thank you to the families who have dropped off donations of new and/or lightly used winter clothing. We will continue to accept donations such as winter jackets, snow pants, mittens, gloves, and toques. Please drop off any donations prior to Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
School Council Volunteer Opportunities
A great big thank you to the School Council and supporting volunteers for putting on the Hallowe’en Dance. The students had an amazing time, and this was the buzz of the school on days leading up and to follow. I know our Council Executive is always looking for more volunteers, many opportunities of which do not require your completed volunteer clearance. Please email mcschoolcouncil@gmail.com if you are able to volunteer and support one or more of the amazing school events that they organize.
Sincerely,
Mr. Dustin Turner
Principal, Marion Carson School
