Thank you to all families for another great week of school at Marion Carson School. This year we are trying something a little bit new called “Connect Fridays”. On most Fridays throughout the year students will be in cross-graded groups from 10:10am – 11:10am as a way to foster belonging and connectedness as a whole school. They will engage in activities focussing on belonging, making connections, Indigenous ways of knowing and well-being, that support each child having a voice. These activities are led by various grade team teachers throughout the year, with consistent activities across the whole school. Students are with the same “Connect Family Grouping” each week. Please ask your child(ren) about their “Connect Family Grouping” this week and share in the excitement.

With only two main entrances and exits to our school, we remind parents that having a pre-set meeting spot for your child away from the doors helps support reducing the congestion at dismissal. We find that that Marion’s Meadow, the soccer fields or the outskirts of the courtyard are great options. Please also remind your child that if a parent is not there on time, due to an extenuating circumstance, that they should return to the front door to ring the office bell.

*A reminder to complete all forms from last week’s message by Monday, September 16, 2024.

Mid-Autumn Festival – Sept. 17, 2024

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar with a full moon at night. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of the Chinese New Year. The history of the festival dates back over 3,000 years. Similar festivals are celebrated by other cultures in East and Southeast Asia.

Our whole school will be celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival in a special way this year! Each class will design their own unique mooncakes, representing the themes of family reunion and the sense of belonging that connects us all. These creative mooncakes will be displayed as a collective art piece, symbolizing unity across our school community. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate togetherness while honoring the cultural significance of the festival.

School Photo Days - Sept. 18 (K-6) / Sept. 19 (KMB T/Th)

Our school individual and class photo day is September 18 for most students in Kindergarten through grade 6. Mandarin Bilingual Kindergarten students in the Tuesday/Thursday class will have their photos on the morning of Thursday, September 19th. *Please note that the flyer went home from Lifetouch with a date error. Our K-6 school photos are on Sept. 18 (except for T/Th MB Kindergarten students).

Terry Fox Run – Sept. 20, 2024

This year, we will be hosting our Terry Fox run on Friday, September 20th. We will be watching a short Terry Fox clip inside the school followed by a whole school run outside near the soccer fields from approximately 12:15 to 12:45pm to commemorate Terry Fox. Students should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to be active (runners, a water bottle, and a hat if necessary). Parents are invited to join this event for the outdoor run portion from 12:15 – 12:45 pm if willing and able. If planning to join us, please wait outside near the soccer fields where the event will occur.

We are asking students and families who are able to donate a toonie for Terry in support of our Terry Fox run. All proceeds will go to the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research. Donations can be brought to school in person on September 20. If you’d rather, you can also make an online donation, by visiting our school fundraising page https://schools.terryfox.ca/MarionCarson and clicking donate.

At the end of the Terry Fox run, students will be returning to class to enjoy a juice box, provided by School Council. If you would not like your child to have this treat, please email your child’s teacher before the day of the run and your child’s teacher will instead send it home with them in their backpack. Please note that students will be expected to remain with their class following the run, and will re-enter the school to be dismissed as per normal procedures at 1:15pm.

School Meet the Teacher Conferences – Sept 26 and 27, 2024

Our first meet the teacher school conference is scheduled for September 26 from 4:30 -7:30pm and September 27 from 8:30am – 12pm noon. The booking window to secure your 10-minute conference with your child’s homeroom teacher opens Saturday, September 21 at 10am, and closes Thursday, Sept 26 at 12pm noon. Bookings are completed through your MyCBE account by clicking on the Book and Manage Meeting Times tab.

These conferences are specifically an opportunity for parents to share any important information with their child’s homeroom teacher to support their learning at school, a chance to clarify classroom routines, while also allowing the teacher to share initial steps in each child’s first few weeks of learning. All parents and their children should plan on attending these conferences.

Please ensure that you have access to your MyCBE Account in advance of the booking window.
