Hello / Nǐ hǎo Marion Carson School Families,

 

Thank you to all staff, families and students for helping make the first week back at school one with great joy and success. Teachers have worked hard with their students to setup some initial routines and strengthen classroom relationships. At Marion Carson School we take pride in our ability to support every student. One of the key ways that we make this happen is ongoing communication between home and school. We have formal connection periods throughout the school year, such as school conferences, but encourage families to keep ongoing communication with their child’s teacher. Teachers will email parents throughout the year, and we encourage families to do the same.

 

Please excuse the length of this message as it contains many important links regarding forms needing to be completed to start the school year. Please read this message carefully and use its content for direct links to the various forms whether they need to be completed online, or printed, signed, and returned to the school. There are detailed explanations throughout this email of each form. At the bottom of the email is a summary of all required, and optional forms. Thank you for taking the time to complete all forms by September 18, 2026.

1.      Staffing Update

 

This fall, the CBE has hired hundreds of teachers, education assistants and other school staff to support student learning. These positions have been funded by the Government of Alberta with the intention of addressing classroom complexity and class sizes.

The following staff are part of the Classroom Complexity Team at Marion Carson School for the 2026-27 school year:

  • Ms. Amanda Collins: shifted her position into the role of Classroom Complexity Team Lead Teacher
  • Ms. Erin McIlveen: hired as a Classroom Complexity Team Education Assistant
  • We are in the process of hiring a 2nd Classroom Complexity Team Education Assistant

 

We are very pleased to welcome this team to our school community! This additional staff will help ensure students benefit from increased teacher attention, improved classroom learning environments, and greater support for diverse learning needs.

 

I would like to provide the following staffing updates to start the 2026-27 school year:

  • Ms. Eunbee Oh: temporary teacher for Ms. Keller as she prepares for maternity leave. Ms. Keller will be working as a support teacher until her leave begins.
  • Ms. Huiyi Ma: here as a temporary teacher for Ms. Wilcock, until her return.
  • Ms. Dina Lee: temporary teacher for Ms. Lee while she continues her maternity leave and Full Year Temporary Teacher (FYTT) in the Mandarin Program


Personal Update from Mr. Turner

I would like to share that I will be going on leave effective September 15th through to the end of the year. It is a difficult decision to step away from the school community for which I care about so deeply. Please understand and trust that I have taken careful measures leading up to today’s announcement to ensure that the school is left supported in the best way and with as smooth a transition as possible as we shift into a new acting administration team.

By sharing the news at this time, it provides the ability to continue a transition plan with Ms. Huong Ly who I am happy to announce will be the Acting Principal of Marion Carson School until my return. Mrs. Ly is an experienced administrator who has been an amazing leader and colleague at my side over my past 4 years at Marion Carson School. We have worked side-by-side as a reflective, aligned, and supportive team which makes me confident that the school, its families, and most importantly its students will continue to be well-supported moving forward. With Ms. Ly confirmed into the role of Principal, the Assistant Principal position is currently vacant. Our Area Office team is currently working hard to secure an Acting Assistant Principal, one that will care for and support the Marion Carson school community like we do. We look forward to introducing you to the new addition once they are confirmed.

2.      Meet the Teacher (1-6), School Conferences (K) – Save the Dates 

For Grade 1-6 students, September 24 in the evening will be a Meet the Teacher event for families to visit their child’s classroom, learn about routines, and meet the teacher (more information to come). 

For Kindergarten students, September 24 (evening) and September 25 (day) will be Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences where families will have a dedicated time to meet with the teacher to set up their elementary school journey (more details to come). *Please note that K-6 students do not have school on September 25. 

 

3.      Start of Year Forms 

It is that time of year to complete/update various online forms through SchoolEngage on your MyCBE account. Some of these forms are required, some are optional depending on student need, and some are just for your information. We ask for all forms to be completed no later than Monday, September 18th, 2026. We ask that the forms not directly completed online through SchoolEngage be printed, completed and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher by the same date.

CBE Required Online Forms 

Each year, schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. In CBE, the forms in an online format in SchoolEngage are: 

 

  • Demographic Verification - 2026-27 – This required form is an Alberta Education requirement as proof of Registration for funding purposes and includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information. 
  • Citizenship Information Update - 2026-27 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form. 
  • Annual Authorization - 2026-27 – Combines the following forms: 
    • School District Use of Personal Information - explains how CBE uses personal information in providing education services. 
    • Consent for CBE Use of Student Information – provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by school/district and third parties. 
    • Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside Groups (Third Party) - provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by outside groups and third parties. 

SchoolEngage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account that you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, etc. 

If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on “Create a MyCBE Account”. For online help refer, to MyCBE – Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video).

  • This form is required to be printed, signed and returned by Parents/Guardians and by each student in connection to technology use.

Forms to Complete if Appropriate and Applicable

Please complete if applicable if your child has:  

  • A physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school; and/or  
  • Medication that is to be taken at school; and/or  
  • A Student Health Plan that was in place for the 2025-2026 school year or if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration during the current school year.  
  • If it is required that you complete a Student Health Plan, we strongly encourage you to return these forms IMMEDIATELY.  
  • Please note: all medication is kept in the office for student safety. Please contact the office should your child require the medication on their person. No medication is to be kept in backpacks.  

Noon Supervision and Transportation Registration  

  • Registration for both Noon Supervision and Transportation is completed online through your MyCBE Account.  
  • Please register for Noon Supervision if you have not already done so and if your child stays at school during lunch. We also offer a $5 drop-in supervision fee for lunchroom for students who typically go home for lunch.  
  • Please register for transportation if your child is eligible and you plan on having them take the bus.  
  • Instructions are available on the CBE website Support Page Services Registration (only those students who are registered for Noon Supervision and/or Transportation are eligible to attend Noon Supervision and/or Transportation services as applicable).  

 

Financial Assistance: 

  • Families who require financial assistance can apply through their MyCBE/PowerSchool account. Waiver information is available on the CBE website or contact the school office.  

 

Optional, Recommended Actions 

 

Subscribe to School Messenger 

  • Due to Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), you need to subscribe online if you want to receive email or text messages on “commercial” school topics such as picture days, student fees, field trip costs, fun lunches and more.  
  • If you do not subscribe, you will not receive these messages, but you will receive emails on non-commercial topics such as absence and emergency notifications.  
  • We recommend you subscribe to both emails and texts

*How do I know if I’m signed up to receive commercial messages from School Messenger? 

  • To know if you are receiving all messages including commercial messages, please look to see if you are receiving the weekly Principal’s messages throughout the year. They are also posted on the website, and most of these messages are sent commercially. 

 

Volunteering 

Parents and guardians can access the volunteer form through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. Community members without a child in the system should be directed to the school where they wish to volunteer to complete their registration in person.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.
